Today is my 24th birthday, so i’m drawing this on purpose. Hoping that maybe one day, any of you can use this artwork for a little gift for your friends (especially for those who loves K-Pop or T.O.P). Hope you guys like it!

Maybe some of you already know that I recently interviewed by SeoulBeats.com about my BIGBANG and 2NE1 fanart. If you don’t, you can check this link http://t.co/SV1PMDVu. Some interview material has been updated in accordance with the request of the editor. But if you want to read the full article, you can read it here. (Thanks to Maddie)
Hello, Irawan. Tell us a little bit about yourself. (Where you live? Age? Occupation? etc.)
Hi Seoulbeats. i live in Jakarta-Indonesia, I’m 23 and single (and ready to mingle!), I’m a Fashion Illustrator and a part-time Graphic Designer.
As a Fashion Illustrator, your work has been featured in Nylon, ELLE, Sunsilk Hair Fashion website, CLARA Indonesia as well as Marie Claire. It must feel incredible to see your name and photo on Marie Claire’s Contributor List, and creating the 2011 ELLE Style Agenda must have felt like a great achievement. You’ve accomplished much so far. How does it feel? What is it that you enjoy most about your job as a Fashion Illustrator?
Personally for me, it’s like an achievement, because i worked quite hard to be where i am now, but the fun part is that i enjoy what i do so i don’t see it as a burden. Plus, i get to meet a lot of interesting personalities, via the internet or in real life, compared to when i was only a Graphic Designer. Being a Fashion Illustrator certainly has a lot more perks and it’s a blast for me because it combines the two things i love most: art and fashion.
Your illustrations for Marie Claire’s February 2012 Style Book featured your first attempts using watercolors and the finished product looked amazing. This new medium has recently appeared in your fan art as well. How has your work as a Fashion Illustrator inspired your fan art or is the process vise versa?
Yes, that was indeed my first piece made using the watercolor technique! I used to suck real bad with that particular technique because since I was a kid, I always drew using regular pencils. I couldn’t even use colored pencils. I have received quite a few requests before to draw colored illustrations, and I initially said no, but I figured that as a creative being, I should try develop my skills and venture out of my comfort zone, and I started learning ways to incorporate colors into my drawings.
I guess you can say that my fan art is what inspires my fashion illustrations, because I used to do fan arts in my spare time since high school, and then a few years back then when my style of drawings started to shape up, I incorporated them and made them into fashion illustrations.
On your tumblr under FAQ’s, you’ve mentioned that all of my artwork is already photoshopped and it is not 100% original since you mix between drawing and photography. Would you explain this process for us?
So what it means is basically that in most of my drawings, I usually use some extra final touches and little bits and pieces to make the illustration perfectly done, and I might use photoshop to do them, things such as the pattern of the clothes that are in the drawing and so on. This is basically because I’m such a lazy person. :P
The kiss mark sometimes appears on your illustrations along with your signature, what is it’s meaning?
The kiss watermark is from Kiss with YG Family Spot MV. I just thought it’s an interesting feature to put into my drawings and it gives that special touch especially when I printed them out as a memorabilia to give out to my friends who are fellow K-Pop lovers.
Under FAQ’s, you’ve also mentioned that any requested artwork must be only for 2NE1 or BIGBANG since these are the only groups you follow. What is it that makes 2NE1 and BIGBANG more appealing than other K-pop artists—as both subjects you enjoy drawing and as groups you follow?
I have been a die-hard BIGBANG and 2NE1 fan ever since I saw one of their MVs in youtube. And since then I have been such a FANATIC! It’s not that I don’t like other K-Pop groups and not because that they’re bad or anything. It’s just that (this is embarrassing to admit), I don’t think that I can handle me being this crazily addicted to other groups as well! I spent most of my leisure time for BIGBANG and 2NE1, I’m scared that I might not have any time left in a day if I follow other groups.
I think it’s because of the fashion and the quality of their music is what I love most. Their fashion is to die for and their music is so catchy, what’s not to love?
Most of you sketches are of T.O.P. and BOM, more so the former than the latter. Although you’ve drawn each member of Big Bang, most of the illustrations on your tumblr for 2ne1 are of Bom and Dara. Have you drawn Minzy or CL in the past but not uploaded the drawings?
I have drawn CL in the past, but I feel that those drawings aren’t really quite what I expected compared to the drawings of Bom and Dara… but I will continue to try to draw CL and Minzy until I could produce one that’s worth publishing!
A fellow SB staff writer and fan of yours had a question of her own for you but she’s been too shy to ask herself. Noticing how you mainly draw members of BIGBANG or 2NE1, Ciara wonders if there are other K-pop idols you have been tempted to draw?
Of course! I secretly always wanted to try drawing Dongwoon BEAST and Jay Park!
From your Facebook account, some American celebrities have also caught your eye. You’re a fan of Lady Gaga and have also done illustrations of her. Would you ever consider drawing Lana Del Rey since you follow her as well?
I’m absolutely in love with Lana Del Rey! Her songs, and her quirky personalities is so different to so many other artists out there! It sometimes occurs in my mind to go and try drawing western artists from time to time, but somehow I find myself lost in time drawing T.O.P and Bom. :D
In one of your tumblr illustrations of T.O.P., you’ve drawn him when he attended the Blue Dragon Awards Hand Printing Event to which he wore a YSL Arty Oval ring. I like the detail of this tumblr photo since in it you are wearing the same ring design. Is your style ever inspired by K-pop? If so, which artists do you find most influence your wardrobe and why?
Well I think it is quite obvious that I’m a T.O.P. fanatic, and because of that, I often get inspired by what he wears on and off stage! Even though I know most of his wardrobe is high-end luxury brands and costs an arm and a leg, I often try to incorporate his style of fashion to what I wear most days, such as the YSL Arty Oval ring.
I often wear high sneakers with jeans and a hoodie or jacket, to cover the fact that I’m too skinny. So I guess if I had to label my style, it’s a toned down version of GD, T.O.P. and Justin Bieber maybe? :D
In one of your tweets, you’ve once quoted male model Sen Mitsuji in which he states, “What I find most interesting and wonderful about fashion is the ability of something you wear to affect a real internal disposition.” K-pop is a genre known for it’s visuals. Do you believe that fashion within K-pop can also affect the viewer (fans) as it would the person (idol) wearing the garment or piece of jewel?
YES! Well, that’s the case for me, as I have mentioned in the previous question, as a follower of the fashion trend, and as a fan of K-Pop, it is very exciting to see things that you love be combined in a single media, and I think for all other K-Pop lovers who loves fashion, it would also affect their style and attitude towards fashion.
International fansites like LP2NE1 and BIGBANG Updates have recognized your fan art and some of your illustrations have even been tweeted to Park Bom by her fans. Curiously enough, those who are a fan of YG artists have also become a fan your own work. How does it feel to have your number of followers on your Twitter reach 13.4k? Is there anything you would you like to say to them personally?
Well one thing is certain: it is very VERY unexpected to see so many warm wonderful and positive reactions from everyone and all the fansites. To this day it’s still hard to believe I have so many followers to listen to me blurt out nonsense and random things. I would like to just say thanks to everyone who have been supporting me and encouraging me throughout these times. I apologize if I may have offended anyone or if I’m unable to reply to all the tweets. Pray for me so that I could go to Korea and the YG office, so I could show them my artworks and so that I could meet T.O.P in person! :)
Thank you SB!
